The Automechanika aftermarket trade fair brand has been celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, having opened its doors in Frankfurt on September 18, 1971. At that time nobody would have predicted that this event would develop into the world’s leading businesses platform for the automotive supplier industry, the service and repair sector and the trade in general.
The trade associations, especially the Federation of the German Motor Trade (ZDK) were not deterred by the cancellation of the Frankfurt Motor show that year and instead called for an event for automotive parts and accessories suppliers. About 500 companies and 75 000 visitors from 63 countries came to Frankfurt for the first Automechanika.
The participants were delighted and the results were good for all parties concerned. It was then decided to stage Automechanika in the alternate years between the Frankfurt Motor Shows.
Today Automechanika is not only one of the leading trade fairs organised by Messe Frankfurt, but also the world’s most international trade fair brand. Automechanika is now held at 11 venues worldwide in addition to the flagship event in Frankfurt. The cities outside Germany where Automechanika trade fairs are now staged are: Moscow, Shanghai, Bangkok, St. Petersburg, Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Kuala Lumpur, Madrid, Istanbul and Johannesburg.
Frankfurt continues to be the home venue and last year attracted 4 471 exhibitors from 76 countries and 155 000 visitors.
Already 80 per cent of the exhibition space has already been sold for the next Automechanika to be held in Frankfurt from September 11-16, 2012. Companies wishing to register for the 2012 event can find full details on the internet at www.automechanika.com.
Automechanika South Africa will be staged at the Johannesburg Expo Centre for the third time in 2013, with the show dates being May 8 – 11.
Sewells in South Africa has become part of a global company which provides motor dealer development services – largely in training, development and business consulting – to more than 4 000 automotive retailers throughout Australia, India, New Zealand, Thailand, China, and other countries in the Asia Pacific region as well as throughout Southern Africa.
After significant growth in these emerging markets over the last decade, the Sewells Group has acquired ownership of Ronald Sewells and Associates which now operates as Sewells Group South Africa.
This move sees the end of WesBank’s involvement with Sewells SA at the ownership level, although a number of key strategic relationships – including the sponsorship of the prestigious Businessman of the Year award – will continue.
Making these announcements on a recent visit to South Africa, Paddy O’Brien, CEO of Sewells Group, referred to the respective contributions in the growing global success of the organisation by both Sewells SA and WesBank. He said that whilst the Group Holding Company was based in Australia, with offices also in China, India and Thailand, it would always be seen as having its roots and its heritage in South Africa and he welcomed the opportunity to play a more active part in the future plans for Sewells Group South Africa.
“Since the mid-eighties, the development of an integrated business model for retail dealers has evolved from its early beginnings in South Africa into a world class best practice business philosophy which dealers have embraced everywhere. As we have gone through the process of implementing this concept around the world, the model has been tested and refined with significant results’.
Paddy also said there is a much stronger appreciation of the importance of sustainable financial health for dealers as a competitive advantage for OEM’s.
“The notion of “us and them” disappears when there is a united approach to developing the overall health of a network,” he explained.
An ethanol-powered Scania bus fitted with Bridgestone’s latest, environmentally-friendly Ecopia tyres, is highlighting the benefits of green transportation as it shuttles delegates throughout the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban.
The 17th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is known as COP17, meets annually to assess progress in dealing with climate change.
“Bridgestone South Africa is proud to be associated with this important conference and our involvement, which includes the sponsorship of tyres for the shuttle bus, should be seen as integral with our corporate global environmental policy, One Team, One Planet,” explained Bridgestone South Africa marketing manager Tony Burns.
“The Bridgestone Group is committed to continually working towards a sustainable society with integrity and in unity with its customers, partners, communities and the world around us.
“Fuel efficiency is a key to reducing C02 emissions during driving, which in turn helps our planet in the prevention of global warming while valuing natural resources.
“Bridgestone’s new Ecopia EP100A tyre is the next generation of environmentally friendly tyres which provides good balance on performance with lower rolling resistance that results in enhanced fuel efficiency,” Burns added.
“Internal comparative tests, under controlled conditions, have shown that the Ecopia tyre can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10 per cent compared to a standard Bridgestone tyre.
“We are proud of this new kind of tyre that allows drivers to give respect to the environment. Ecopia boasts a high level of both environmental and safety performance and is proof of the company’s global efforts to help protect the environment for a sustainable society.”
